10 THINGS...I'D TELL MY 18-YEAR-OLD SELF
1. Got an idea deep in your gut hollering that you want to pursue a career in X, no matter how wacky, wild, different or peculiar it seems to your family? Ya do? Well, as politely as you can, thank them for their well-meaning, but go after what it is that’s making you tick. You had a place to study Law at law school at 18, and changed your mind and the last minute, which was the right decision!
2. Having a healthy balance between study and social is great. Go to all the parties. Just save time to pour into your studies too.
3. You’ll come across people who, for reasons you literally have zero comprehension of WHY, display unexplained dislike towards you, including adults. For the large, this can be explained by them recognizing your potential (and not liking it).
4. You’re going to be lost, in many ways, a few times, but don’t worry, it’s all part of the process of working things out.
5. Loss that you didn’t anticipate will make you grow up faster, and show you the perennial importance of investing in spending time with those you love the most because suddenly, they can be gone.
6. Don’t be scared of failing. What’s scarier is never taking yourself out your comfort zone. You’ll start to realise your potential once you stray out of what is known to you.
7. Being different itn’t just ok, it’s brilliant. Ok so you loved snakes and dancing with fire at 18 and it may have raised a few eyebrows. Ignoring the eye-brow raising and moving to the beat of your own drum is one of the most fulfilling paths you’ll choose.
8. Surround yourself with the right people: You sometimes hang out with crews or people who quite frankly, make you feel sh*t. Bite the bullet and cut em ‘off.
9. Taking the decision to re-explore sport and practice healthy habits for your body and mind is one of the best decision’s you’ll make, and explain a lot of reasons why you sometimes felt sub-par in your late teens.
10. Put down the tanning oil girl, SPF 50 is your frickin’ best mate
