SPANISH SEEKERS TRIP ROUND-UP & VIDEO
A few weeks back my crew and I packed our bags and hot-tailed it over to Asturias in Northern Spain in search of waves and warm autumn wanderings. I love to check out new spots, land in new airports, sample the different, so jumped at the prospect of a last-minute trip to a part of Spain I hadn't yet been to.
The raw beauty of Asturias was evident from the get-go, the landscape boasting a near Jurassic Park rugged wildness to it. Think endless lush green hills, verdant forests packed thick with trees, exposed stone faces and rich, warm earth. We headed straight to our lodgings for the first part of our trip, the Alamar Surf House in Salinas, run by the smiling & super-welcoming Caco & crew. A colonial-style house facing the beachbreak of Salinas, Alamar makes you feel at home straight away, with invitations to hostel dinners, the offer of board hire and heaps of tips on the local spots readily given.
Our first surf over at Cadavero on day one was possibly our best, unfortunately the waves weren't really playing ball the rest of the week. Things got messier and even though it's a little frustrating if the wave gods ain't always on your side, we visited so many different spots, and all were stunningly beautiful. A rainy and blustery session over at Freijulf was pretty mind blowing for it's breathtaking natural beauty. I seriously thought I would see a T-Rex busting through the trees at any moment, such was the near primordial feel to the flora.
With most of the spots not working much in the week, I could see that Salinas would be killer on a good day, with the occasional good set coming through. All the spots we visited were either totally empty or just had a few local or visiting surfers in the water, pretty trippy when you're used to busy breaks. Check out my video round-up below - unfortunately I didn't get much surfing footage as the waves weren't hot all week, but I stuck the Contour cam on my board on my final evening session and managed to snag a few waves in near flat conditions ;)
